The Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem) in the last few weeks has witnessed an explosion of Israeli forces’ presence, supposedly for ‘security reasons’.
But having a closer look at – or just opening your eyes for – the multitude of restrictions, hindrances and fears aroused by this, proves that all of this has nothing to do with ‘security’ – but everything with instilling fear in the Palestinians still resisting the manifold ways the Israeli forces are trying to expel them not only from the Old City of Jerusalem, but all of Jerusalem in general. Just two days ago, on Thursday 14th of October, Israeli forces shot and killed a 20-year old Palestinian youth. Immediately after he was shot, bystanders were forced to move back by Israeli forces, while the young |
man was lying on the ground bleeding to death, with no-one administering first aid.
Whereas Israeli settlers from settlements within East Jerusalem, illegal under international law, where allowed to get closer to take trophy-photos of yet another killed Palestinian, Israeli forces suddenly stormed towards a group of Palestinians, threatening to beat them with their rifles and batons. Palestinians, thus, were between a rock and a hard place: run and risk being shot multiple times with live ammunition for the simple act of running away from a heavily armed trigger-happy militarised force that just killed another Palestinian, or walk away slowly and be attacked by the same army.
Being forced away, Palestinians held on to their phones in their hands – prevented to take photos of the Israeli forces’ crimes – with fear high that if someone reaches into a trouser-pocket or bag to take out anything, including a phone, they would receive multiple fatal gun-shot wounds by the Israeli forces closely watching every movement of the Palestinian bystanders.
Israeli settlers, on the other hand, were free to approach the body of the youth, who, in the meantime has died without ever receiving any medical attention, to take photos. The Palestinian Red Crescent Ambulance Crew right outside Damascus Gate was physically pushed back to the ambulance and then forced to leave by the Israeli forces.
With the recent escalation of killings of Palestinians in al-Quds (Jerusalem) by Israeli forces, this is hardly an exception. This in itself, is already a message: when the killing of a Palestinian youth is no longer something ordinary, but something that just happens, something that will not be investigated under any circumstances, something that enjoys wide acceptance and often even provokes cheering by Israeli bystanders, – is it something that became ‘normal’?
Various news networks have decided that instead of bringing their equipment over and over again, it’ll be easier to leave it at Damascus Gate all the time. Sanitation workers were ordered by the Israeli forces to clean off the blood of the Palestinian youth from the ground to erase every spot of the crime just committed. Police barriers are kept outside Damascus Gate, ready to close off the entrance at any time.
The Old City of al-Quds (Jersualem) is ‘fortified’, at least two, or groups of four to ten Israeli forces, are at every corner or alleyway. Every-day life for Palestinians was forced to a halt, while Israeli forces are comfortably occupying plastic chairs kept outside of shops for tourists to rest, languishing on porches where people used to play cards, or sit in front of locked shops closed in fear of the constantly rising threat of settler and police violence against Palestinians.
The omnipresence of Israeli forces and restrictions, though, seem to be geared only towards Palestinians. The persons asked to pass through the metal detectors set up in the Old City are always Palestinians, ordered to lift up their shirts and trousers, take off their shoes and empty their bags even after passing through, from time to time with their children looking on in horror, children’s faces distorted by fear. Video
For Palestinian children, there’s no place to be a child and play, with an occupying army, waiting just around every corner, shouting at children for accidentally exploding a balloon they were playing with in their parents’ shop. Parents try to keep an eye on their children at all times, simple tasks like sending them out to buy bread might result in them going missing and a frantic search – just to find out that the Israeli police arrested minor children and did not even bother to inform their parents.
There is no regard for Palestinians basic human rights, or even respect for them as human beings. Whereas Israelis and tourists are free to roam the streets of the Old City, Palestinian residents are often stopped at any or even various of the checkpoints, forcing to explain again and again that they are residents, arguing for being allowed to do the most normal thing in life: trying to go back home.

A group of angry young men at dawn Friday set fire to the mausoleum of Yousuf (Joseph's tomb), east of Nablus city, which is claimed as a sacred site by Jewish settlers.
Eyewitnesses told the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) that hundreds of Palestinian young men marched en masse to the mausoleum near Balata refugee camp, destroyed the fence surrounding it and showered it with Molotov cocktails.
They added that the place burst into flames before Palestinian security forces along with fire trucks arrived at the scene to control the fire.
The Jewish settlers under military protection organize every week visits to the mausoleum on allegations that it belongs to Prophet Joseph, while archeologists and local residents confirm that it is the tomb of a righteous Muslim man called Yousuf Duweikat, who lived during the era of the Ottoman Empire.

Two groups of Israeli settlers stormed Tuesday al-Aqsa Mosque in two times under heavy Israeli police protection, while Palestinian worshipers were denied access in.
Nearly 20 Israeli settlers broke into Muslims’ holy shrine Tuesday morning in total provocation to Muslim worshipers.
Tight Israeli restrictions were imposed on Muslim worshipers’ access into the Mosque, where only men and women who are over the age of 30 are allowed to enter.
Later on the same day, six other settlers stormed the Mosque under the protection of Israeli police forces who detained a Palestinian worshiper for filming the settlers’ break-in and confiscated another worshiper’s identity card for approaching the settlers.
Along the same line, a Palestinian female worshiper was detained near al-Asbat Gate of the Mosque and taken to a nearby police station for unknown reasons.
Earlier Tuesday, two Palestinian youths were brutally assaulted and humiliated by Israeli forces for trying to enter into the Mosque.
The Israeli forces forced the two youths to take their clothes off before the crowds.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government is considering banning the Islamic Movement in the Green Line headed by Sheikh Raed Salah on the charge of alleged incitement to violence.
According to Israeli Channel Two, most of Israeli ministers approve the proposal whereas there are different opinions among Israeli security authorities in this regard.
Israeli leaders opine that the Islamic Movement and its leader Sheikh Salah, particularly, is responsible for incitement to resistance operations by stressing that the Aqsa Mosque is in danger due to Israeli plans.
Netanyahu said Saturday night he will take aggressive measures against the Islamic Movement claiming it is a source of threat to real peace and internal security of Israel.
On the other hand, Israeli security forces have different opinions in terms of banning the movement. The Shin Bet has changed its position and approved the ban, but the Israeli police believe such a move is dangerous and has negative consequences.
Israeli police opined that banning the movement will push it to work secretly and this will increase the possibility of launching armed attacks against Israel.
Israeli leaders also believe that this move indicates that there is big pressure on Israel caused by Palestinian latest resistance operations.

and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories, the statement added.
A few days earlier, Netanyahu ordered the deployment of 4,000 more Israeli cops across Occupied Jerusalem.
Spokesperson for the occupation police, Luba Samri, said thousands of Israeli cops are currently stationed across Occupied Jerusalem, particularly in the Old City and the eastern areas.

After Palestinian activists and political factions called for a day of protest against Israeli violations, the Israeli government decided to close Jerusalem, and only allow Palestinian men who are above 50 to pray on Friday at the Al Aqsa mosque.
The recent wave of clashes erupted over a week ago, as Israeli settlers under the protection of the Israeli army escalated their invasions of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s old city.
According to the Palestinian ministry of health, seven Palestinian have been killed, including a child, and more than 750 others have been injured by Israeli military live gunfire, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas since the start of October.
In related news, the Israeli mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, urged Israeli residents of Jerusalem to carry weapons. On Thursday one Palestinian was killed in Tel Aviv, and two others were arrested in separate incidents, one in Al Afoula near Tel Aviv and one in Jerusalem, for allegedly attempting to stab Israeli soldiers and settlers.
The Israeli online site Ynet news quoted Baraket saying that Israeli “civilians with operational combat experience can help foil terror attacks and increase residents' confidence.”
On Wednesday, an armed Israeli settler shot and seriously wounded, a teenage Palestinian girl, 18 years of age, near the Council Gate (Bab al-Majles) in the Old City.
The Israeli shooter claimed that the girl tried to stab him, while eyewitness accounts contradicted his allegation. The Israeli police alleged the young woman “stabbed the settler in the neck, and tried to escape, before he shot her."
But Palestinian eyewitnesses said the wounded girl, from Sur Baher in Jerusalem, did not carry a knife, or a weapon, and that the Israeli assailant was harassing and insulting her, near Bab al-Majles (The Council Gate) before removing her hijab, covering her head, and shooting her when she tried to push him away.

Hamas on Wednesday said the orders given by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to bar ministers and lawmakers from visiting the Al-Aqsa Mosque is of no value.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in press statements: “Netanyahu’s latest decisions to ban ministers from the al-Aqsa Mosque are worthless. Such bans should also be slapped against the fanatic settlers.”
Abu Zuhri called on the Israeli occupation to cease Judaization schemes and violations of the sanctity of the al-Aqsa Mosque and lift the noose tightened around Muslims’ freedom of worship.
He urged the Palestinian youth in the West Bank and Occupied Jerusalem to stand on their guard to Israel’s preplanned terrorism.

Sheikh Raed Salah , head of the Islamic Movement in 1948 Occupied Palestine, held the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for the escalation of the situation in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem.
Sheikh Salah said, according to the news agency Anatolia, that: "The head of the Israeli government, Netanyahu, bear full responsibility for the escalations in the West Bank and Jerusalem, because of his attempts to tamper with the al-Aqsa Mosque, thinking that the weak and confused Arab situation would enable him to divide al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews".
He added that: "in my opinion, current events will not stop but will develop into a massive intifada, if Netanyahu did not realize his sin when he infringed on the feelings of the Muslims by his policemen assaults on women, the sit-inners, and on al-Aqsa Mosque".
Sheikh Raed Salah commented on the Israeli government’s accusation that the Islamic Movement had planned the clashes in Jerusalem, by saying, "This accusation is funny, because the Palestinian people living in Jerusalem see and hear what the occupation state commits and tries to change in al-Aqsa Mosque, and thus the confrontation widens and grows. Israel is responsible for what is happening and for the violence that will not stop".
With regard to Netanyahu's call for the Israeli mini security cabinet to "outlaw the Islamic Movement", Sheikh Salah said that "Netanyahu must realize that the Islamic Movement is considered legitimate only by its beliefs, its Nation, and the people who loved it, so we will continue our work, our activity and our victory for al-Aqsa Mosque, whatever Netanyahu does or says".
Sheikh Salah pointed out that "the Islamic Movement does not pay attention to what the Israeli officials say, because the Islamic Movement is a thought and a vision, and a doctrine that is settled in the hearts of the believers".
And with regard to the Arab position on the current events in al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Salah said, "The position of Arabs is very weak, but among the advanced positions is the statement delivered by King Abdullah II, in which he stressed that al-Aqsa Mosque is an Islamic holy place that cannot be divided".
Sheikh Salah continued: "The most important positions that we have obtained through our communications with Arab and Islamic countries and officials, was Turkey's position represented by its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who told us in a meeting with him last month that: whoever tampers with al-Aqsa Mosque will be playing with fire, and Turkey will not accept any infringement on the de facto situation in al-Aqsa Mosque".
Sheikh Salah concluded: "I swear to God, who raised the sky without pillars, that the division of al-Aqsa Mosque will never happen, and non-Muslims will never have an inch of it, this is our covenant with God, and a right guaranteed by both heavenly and earthly laws".

The Palestinian people will never allow Israel’s intents to divide the al-Aqsa Mosque both spatially and temporally to see the day, Hamas representative in Lebanon, Ali Baraka said Tuesday.
Baraka said in a statement delivered during the civil solidarity campaign to support Palestine and the nation’s causes in the Lebanese capital of Beirut: “The intifada (uprising) sparked by the Palestinian people and youth is in itself a message from which the Israeli occupation should draw lessons.”
He added addressing Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu: “Enough is enough Netanyahu! Palestinians’ have run out of patience! We will never remain mum over the mounting Israeli aggressions on the holy al-Aqsa Mosque and attempts to divide it.”
He stressed the need for Palestinians to pool resources so as to liberate the occupied territories and restore their rights.
The activist called on the PLO to convene a meeting for its leadership at the soonest time possible so as to set a unified road-map to face up to the Israeli occupation.

The youth movement in the occupied territories of 1948 declared the next Thursday as a rage day for the Palestinians masses.
In this context, the student movement of the National Democratic Alliance called, in a press statement, for Palestinian masses to participate in the demonstration of the rage day in Nazareth city.
The movement assured, according to Al Ray, that this mass demonstration comes to support Al-Aqsa Mosque, and denounce the Israeli settlers' crimes in the Palestinian territories, especially the execution of Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
"This demonstration comes to express our duty to our issues and to defend our freedom and our right to live in dignity on in the Palestinian land, the occupied territories of 1948, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip", the movement said.
The alliance called in all the colleges, institutions and universities to participate in the rage day, and to gather in Nazareth city on Thursday.

Political bureau member of Hamas Ezzet Resheq Monday called for stepping up resistance and activism to defend the holy al-Aqsa Mosque against Israel’s state terrorism.
“We strongly push for an intifada (uprising) and for stepping up resistance everywhere across the occupied Palestinian territories,” Resheq told the Turkish Yeni Şafak daily newspaper.
He said the very plazas of the holy al-Aqsa Mosque are going to fan the flames of an intifada, led by Palestinian youths, activists, and sit-inners.
“As long as Israeli crimes and aggressions on the holy al-Aqsa have not been brought to a halt, the Israeli occupation shall never ever have a moment of rest,” he said.
“Resistance is Palestinians’ legitimate key to restore their rights, freedom, soil, and holy sites,” Resheq added.
The Hamas leader warned of underway Israeli schemes to spatio-temporally divide the Mosque between Muslim worshipers and fanatic Israelis.
He spoke out against the mounting break-ins at al-Aqsa by Israeli vandals and the age restrictions imposed on the Muslim congregation.
He branded Israel’s simmering aggressions "proofs of state terrorism".
“But none of such schemes shall ever see the day. It is just out of the question that Palestinians might forfeit a single inch of their land,” Resheq stated.
He added that any attack on al-Aqsa Mosque—the third holiest site in Islam—is also an attack on the Muslim Nation, for al-Aqsa “belongs to every single Muslim across the globe.”
Resheq hailed Turkey’s and Erdogan’s pro-Palestine positions and support for the holy al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli occupation authorities and police have been cordoning off Muslims’ the holy al-Aqsa Mosque, in Occupied Jerusalem, for the 10th day running.
Activist Dhiaa Hamouda said a series of roadblocks and barriers have been pitched by the Israeli occupation soldiers on the Wad Street, where Palestinian passers-by were subjected to exhaustive inspection.
