Egyptian authorities closed on Sunday evening Rafah border crossing with the besieged Gaza Strip after rare and exceptional four-day opening.
The Border and Crossing Authority in Gaza revealed in a brief statement that 3,142 passengers were allowed to leave the Strip for humanitarian purposes or were allowed admission as a result of holding Egyptian passports.
Meanwhile, 894 stranded passengers were allowed to enter Gaza during the four-day opening while 141 passengers were prevented from entering Egypt for unknown reasons, according to the statement.
The statement pointed out that Egyptian authorities closed the border crossing without updating the Palestinian side of any expected decision to extend the opening especially that the four-day period did not meet the humanitarian needs of tens of thousands of Gazans.
Hamas Movement had earlier called on the Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing permanently in order to address the needs of 30,000 people who are in dire need for travel.
Earlier on Sunday, a delegation of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) returned to Gaza Strip after a two-week visit to Cairo.
In a Facebook post, member of the PFLP’s political bureau Rabah Mihana underlined that “the visit was organized with the aim of holding meetings with the group’s abroad members and our Egyptian brothers.”
Mihana said that the Rafah crossing, Gaza's only gateway to the world, has become a symbol of suffering and tragedy for tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza Strip, pointing out that the delegation’s trip to Cairo took 17 hours.

The Egyptian authorities on Sunday morning opened the Rafah border crossing for the fourth day for the travel of a limited number of passengers.
Only 10 buses carrying a total of 1,008 passengers had left Gaza yesterday through the Rafah crossing.
According to the border and crossings authority in Gaza, five ambulances carrying a number of wounded and sick citizens also crossed into the Egyptian side on Saturday.
Last Thursday, 369 Palestinian passengers, who were stranded in Egypt, were able to enter Gaza, while the Egyptian authorities rejected the travel requests of 40 others and prevented them from leaving Gaza.
During the last two days, 2,256 passengers left for Egypt through the crossing, 301 others entered Gaza and 113 citizens were denied entry to the Egyptian territories with no stated reasons.
Palestinian media sources have expected that the Egyptian authorities may open the Rafah crossing for two additional days, but there is still no official confirmation in this regard.
Haneyya urges Egypt to keep Rafah crossing open permanently
Deputy political bureau head of Hamas, Ismail Haneyya, on Sunday urged the Egyptian authorities to keep the Rafah border crossing open around the clock.
Speaking during the al-Quds and al-Aqsa Festival held by Hamas, Haneyya said: “We are quite aware of Egypt’s needs in terms of national security. We, Gazans, have done our best to boost security along the borders.”
He added that Hamas has no military activity in Sinai or elsewhere. The Hamas official called on the Palestinian people and Muslim nation to adopt a unified strategy to face up to the Israeli occupation.
He stressed Hamas’s ongoing efforts to boost national unity and preserve the bonds of all accords signed with regional and international parties. Haneyya hailed the Palestinian protesters and anti-occupation activists in Occupied Jerusalem, the West Bank, and 1948 Occupied Palestine. He called for protecting the Jerusalem Intifada and warned of underway attempts to snuff out the flames of anti-occupation activism.
“As we are going through an exceptional phase in our journey of national liberation, we need to pluck up our courage and come up with challenging decisions,” he further stated. “The uprising is the choice of a people and of a generation that is tracking the road towards the liberation of their motherland,” Haneyya concluded.

The Egyptian authorities on Wednesday evening reclosed the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip before passengers after four buses and four ambulances crossed into Egypt.
Two of the four buses that left Gaza belonged to an Egyptian coordination committee, while four passengers arrived in Gaza coming from the Egyptian side, according to the Palestinian border and crossing committee.
The Egyptian authorities had pledged to temporarily open the Rafah crossing for four days starting on Wednesday for the travel of passengers from both sides.
The Palestinian authorities in Gaza said that the Rafah crossing saw very slow passenger traffic on the first day of its opening as a result of the Egyptian measures.
Thousands of Gazans have applied to leave the besieged enclave, but only a few hundred can cross per day.
Last month, Egypt had opened the crossing for two days and allowed in about 700 passengers from Gaza. The crossing only opens for a few days every several months.
