Israel seals off Sabastiya as hundreds of settlers celebrate Passover
Picture
Hundreds of Israeli settlers stormed an archeological site in the Sabastiya village, on Tuesday, in the northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus, on the occasion of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Mayor of Sabasitiya, Muhammad Azem, told Ma'an that hundreds of Israeli settlers stormed the archaeological site for a second day in a row under the protection of heavily armed Israeli forces.

Azem said that Israeli forces set up military checkpoints at all three entrances to Sabastiya and the archaeological site, west of the village, and prevented Palestinian residents from reaching the area.

Azem was informed that Israeli forces sealed off the village under the pretext of easing access for hundreds of Israeli settlers to the archaeological site, in order to hold celebrations for the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Sabastiya is located some 12 kilometers outside the city of Nablus, is the site of ancient ruins dating back 3,000 years, and was listed in the Oslo Accords among the archaeological sites of importance to Israel and designated a "national park."

Israel tightens movement restrictions in al-Khalil
Picture
The Israeli occupation authorities on Sunday embarked on converting a military checkpoint in the Old City of al-Khalil into a crossing, further restricting the Palestinian citizens' movement.

Head of al-Khalil Rehabilitation Committee Emad Hamdan described the Israeli move as "very dangerous" since it means more restrictions on the movement of al-Khalil residents.

Al-Khalil municipality condemned Israel's new policy of turning temporary checkpoints in the Old City into permanent border crossing points.

It added that the new measures fall in line with Israel's thinly-veiled plan to annex the West Bank.

Israeli forces stormed the village of Sebastia at dawn and placed large cement cubes to completely block off the three entrances to the village, to secure the entry of settlers into Sebastia archaeological site, in celebration of Passover.

Forces reportedly marked the houses and alleys where they intended to deploy troops.

The mayor noted that the village is subjected to almost daily violations by Israeli forces, including raids, harassment and arrests, in an attempt to take over the archaeological site.

Israel to impose weeklong closure on W. Bank, Gaza
Picture
"IOF checkpoint near Ibrahimi Mosque in al-Khalil"

A weeklong Israeli closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip will begin on April 19 after nightfall at the pretext of securing Jewish celebrations during the holiday of passover, a statement issued by the Israeli occupation army said.

All crossings and checkpoints will be closed to Palestinians as of Friday at midnight until April 27, and only a few people with humanitarian, medical and exceptional cases will be allowed to travel through Israeli-controlled entry points after receiving approval from the army’s coordinator of government activities in the occupied territories.

The Israeli army and security forces will also impose tight movement restrictions on the Palestinians through setting up many makeshift checkpoints and deploying roadblocks at entrances leading to areas and sites in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Another closure will be imposed by the Israeli army on the West Bank and Gaza from May 7 until 9 of the same month to celebrate the occupation of Palestine or what Israelis call the establishment of the Jewish state (the Palestinian Nakba).

Israel seals off road near South Hebron Hills
Picture
The Israeli authorities sealed off the road between al-Tuwwana and al-Karmel villages east of Yatta City in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron, on Wednesday morning.

Fouad al-Umour, coordinator of a local popular committee in the South Hebron Hills, said that Israeli forces placed cement block sealing off the road between the two villages.

Al-Umour added that the closure is a threat that Israeli might completely seal off the road, or place an iron gate, preventing movement of locals in or out of Yatta and Masafer Yatta area.

The South Hebron Hills, known locally as Masafer Yatta, lie almost entirely in Area C, the 62 percent of the West Bank under full Israeli civil and security control since the 1993 Oslo Accords.

Israeli authorities seek to displace Masafer Yatta residents, in order to seize their lands, as part of an Israeli settlement expansion plan in the West Bank.

Around 3,000 Israeli settlers live in illegal Jewish-only settlements in the Yatta region, according to the Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem (ARIJ).

Masafer Yatta residents were expelled at the time of the establishment of a firing zone in the 1970s and were eventually allowed back following a long court battle, but are under the constant threat of being expelled or seeing their homes demolished.

'Collective punishment' enacted on Palestinians in Issawiya for 5th day
Picture
Israeli authorities continued to enforce a strict crackdown on the Issawiya neighborhood, in the central occupied West Bank city of Jerusalem, for the fifth consecutive day, on Tuesday, with Palestinians saying they have been subjected to “collective punishment” through road closures, arbitrary searches, and mass detentions.

Muhammad Abu al-Hummus, member of a local follow-up committee, said that Israeli forces constantly raided Issawiya for five consecutive days and set up checkpoints at its entrances.

Abu al-Hummus added that Israeli forces set up the checkpoints since predawn hours and conducted extensive searches of Palestinian-owned vehicles and buses.

In addition, Israeli forces also checked ID cards of Palestinian drivers and carried out background checks.

Israeli forces also detained five Palestinian youths after breaking into their homes. However, their identity remained unknown.

Palestinian areas in occupied East Jerusalem have seen an influx of Israeli settlers at the cost of home demolitions, the eviction of Palestinian families, as well as a heightened presence of Israeli forces and discriminatory policing.

Issawiya is commonly subjected to police raids and restrictions on freedom of movement for local Palestinians in the form of roadblocks and arbitrary searches. Due to the aggressive nature of the raids, local youth sometimes throw rocks or Molotov cocktails at police.

Soldiers Close Road With Sand Hills Near Hebron
Picture
Israeli soldiers closed with sand hills, Monday, a road linking between several villages east of the Yatta town, south of southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Rateb Jabour, the coordinator of the National and Popular Committee against the illegal Israeli Annexation Wall and Colonies in southern West Bank, told the WAFA Palestinian News Agency that the soldiers placed the sand hills on the road which links the villages of Khirbat Shu’ab al-Batim and Ma’in with Masafer Yatta village.

Jabour added that the Committee has repeatedly reopened and rehabilitated the road, after it was bulldozed and closed by the army several times.

He said that Israel has been carrying out repeated violations against the Palestinians in that area, and around it, so that it can expand its illegal colonies, built on occupied lands in direct violations of International Law and the Four Geneva Convention.

Azzun village sealed off by Israeli forces for 19th day
Picture
The main entrance of the Azzun village, in the northern occupied West Bank district of Qalqiliya, has remained sealed off by Israeli forces for 19 consecutive days, according to local sources on Sunday.

Israeli forces sealed off the village's main entrance with large cement blocks 19 days ago, preventing passage in both directions and forcing Palestinian residents to take a different route to reach other districts.

The Israeli army claimed that the seal off was in response to Palestinian youths cutting a piece of the Israeli-erected electric fence.

However, locals confirmed that the main goal is illegal Israeli settlement expansion in the area.

Azzun is surrounded on all sides by areas under Israeli military control and an Israeli settlement bloc sits directly to the south. It has one of the highest rates of detainees per capita of all villages in the occupied West Bank, including many children.

Riyad Hannoun, the mayor of Azzoun, said the Israeli army has been conducting daily invasions, violent searches of homes and many abductions among the residents, especially the young men.

Hannoun added that the closure of the main road has forced the Palestinians to take long, rough and unpaved roads, just of be able to leave their village or reenter it.

He also said that the Israeli army has been conducting serious violations against the residents, including isolating large areas of their farmlands, to build and expand Israel’s illegal colonies.

Israel prevents opening of agricultural road in Yatta
Picture
Israeli forces prevented the opening of an agricultural road, on Monday, in western Yatta City in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron.

Coordinator of a local settlement against the Israeli separation wall, Rateb al-Jbour, reported that Israeli forces prevented Palestinians in the al-Amad area in western Yatta from opening an agricultural road, southeast of a nearby illegal settlement, to be used by local farmers.

Al-Jbour pointed out that this is the second time Israel stops work on the road.

Around 3,000 Israeli settlers live in illegal Jewish-only settlements in the Yatta region, according to the Applied Research Institute Jerusalem.

The South Hebron Hills, known locally as Masafer Yatta, lie almost entirely in Area C, the 62 percent of the West Bank under full Israeli civil and security control since the 1993 Oslo Accords.
